Should you do your own taxes?

Some people can get away with doing it themselves. Other folks need professional help. Here's how to tell which group you belong to -- plus a few tips for choosing the right preparer.

It's not what you know that's important here. It's what you don't know . . . or, more to the point, what you think you know and really don't.

If you have a simple return, you might consider e-filing or using a simple tax program. But remember, you're not hiring a tax pro just to put numbers in boxes. Any monkey can do that.

Before we get any deeper into this, a disclosure: I have two law degrees, and I'm licensed by the New Jersey Board of Certified Public Accountants. I make a lot of money as a tax preparer. I have a vested interest.

3 questions to ask yourself

To help you decide whether to do your own taxes, I offer three questions that can help you frame the issue:

1. Are you prepared to give your taxes your time?

In 2007, the IRS estimated that the average taxpayer needed 24.2 hours to do his or her 2006 tax return, 52.2 hours if a Schedule C for business or a Schedule E for rental properties was filed.

Filing online through the IRS Web site, or through a tax program such as TaxCut or TurboTax, can save you a lot of time filling out the forms. But you still must organize all the materials.

And that assumes you have a fairly simple return with a limited number of deductions. It also assumes you have a good idea of what the records you'll need to do your taxes. Not sure? No problem. MSN Money has a checklist that can help.

2. Are you prepared to put up cash to hire a preparer?

Getting someone to do your taxes can cost $50 to $100 at the low end -- assuming a simple return -â€“ or up to several thousand dollars for a complicated return. The average for an itemized return is more than $200.

One consideration: Any fee you pay may be deductible on your 2009 return if you itemize. Tax preparation fees qualify as miscellaneous deductions, the sum of which must be more than 2% of your adjusted gross income before you can claim a deduction.

3. Are you prepared to deal with the complexity of the federal code?

Because the tax code is so complicated, more than 60% of Americans have professionals do their tax returns.

A growing number of individuals are filing electronically; more than 90 million taxpayers filed their 2008 returns that way. Much of this growth has come from professionals filing their client's returns electronically.

Even though electronic filing has made mathematical errors less likely, many taxpayers still need or want assistance. So if you've got the money, and you lack the time, skills or interest to handle your own IRS paperwork, look for a tax preparer who will give you your money's worth.

Pay for advice, not typing skills

There are four basic categories of tax preparers: storefront agents such as those at H&R Block, certified public accountants, enrolled agents and lawyers. It's not the title that's important. It's the way the preparer approaches your return.

If you go to a tax preparer who just takes your numbers and inputs them into your return, I believe you've wasted your money and time. The key is finding an individual who specializes in taxation and keeps up with tax trends and changes in tax law. What you should pay for is advice and direction. More specifically, here's what to expect:

A good tax preparer starts by asking a lot of questions. The only way you'll get your money's worth is if the preparer understands what you do and how you do it -- and then scours for every legitimate deduction.

A good tax preparer is a teacher who educates you not only on what's allowable as a deduction but also on how to structure your activities to minimize your tax exposure.

A good preparer focuses not only on your 2009 transactions, but also on how you can reduce your 2010 taxes.

Clearly, a tax attorney is going to be more expensive than an enrolled agent or a storefront tax preparer. But if your income justifies it, the more sophisticated advice and direction should more than offset the additional cost.

If you do nothing else, get a checkup

Again, I'm biased. If you choose to do your own taxes, fair enough. But let me make a suggestion: Consult with a good tax professional at least once every three to five years -- just to find out whether you're missing anything.

If you're starting your first job, for example, you may not know that you could contribute to a Roth IRA.

You can't successfully play the tax game if you don't know all the rules. That's why I think everyone should -- at least occasionally -- pay a professional.

Te observe mientras ibas rumbo al trabajo y espere pacientemente todo el día. Con todas tus actividades supongo que estabas demasiado ocupado para decirme algo, pero esta bien aún queda mucho tiempo.

Después encendiste el televisor, y mientras cenabas nuevamente te olvidaste de hablar conmigo. A la hora de dormir creo que ya estabas muy cansado. Después de decirle buenas noches a tu familia caíste en tu cama y casi de inmediato te dormiste.

Quizás no te das cuenta de que siempre estoy ahí a tu lado. Tengo más paciencia de la que te imaginas. También quisiera enseñarte como tener paciencia para con otros. Te amo tanto que espero todos los días por una oración, un pensamiento o un poco de gratitud de tu corazón.

La Carta

Una mujer humilde, un día, recibió una carta muy peculiar y comenzó a leerla:
Querida Ruth: "Voy a estar en tu barrio el sábado en la tarde y quisiera verte. Te quiere siempre, Jesús"
Sus manos temblaban mientras colocaba la carta en la mesa. Porqué Dios querrá visitarme si no soy nadie especial?. Además, no tengo nada que ofrecerle. Tendré que ir al supermercado y comprar algo para la cena"
Cuando regresaba de hacer las compras para la cena se le acercaron dos mendigos sucios y mal olientes y le dijeron:
- "Señorita, no tengo trabajo y mi esposa y yo hemos estado viviendo en las calles, nos estamos congelando y tenemos mucha hambre y si usted nos pudiera ayudar se lo agradeceríamos mucho"
- Me gustaría ayudarlos, pero soy pobre también. Todo lo que tengo es un poco de pan y jamón, tomen toda esta comida, creo que puedo servirle otra cosa a mi invitado"
- "Gracias. Muchas gracias!. Exclamó la mujer y Ruth pudo ver que estaba temblando de frío.
- "Sabe, tengo otro abrigo en casa, tome este", dijo, mientras se lo ponía sobre los hombros. Ella regresó a casa sonriendo y sin su abrigo ni comida que ofrecer a Jesús. GOOGLE WAVE - The next best thing!!!

All this hype about "Google Wave" is making me more anxious to get an "invitation".

Anyways, seems to me that this new google will be very promising. I saw the loooong video they have up on their site and it was really interesting to find out how this wonderful collaboration tool works. It's like a college lobby, or break area, where everyone meets up now and then, to catch up or pass notes and just share stuff all day. And not to mention, you have bulletin boards and posters up in college lobbies too. So, to me, it's a virtual representation of that. I am a college student and I know that I will definately benefit from this new tool.

There is tons of people looking around different web sites and doing internet search for these invitations, and I am one of those. Care to drop me one? :-)

NEW CAR!!! (actually its a used car)

I am so happy today! I just got my "new" used car today, thanks to my beutiful and wonderful girlfriend; who I love so much. Thank You Che-Che!!! It's a used car, but who cares,.. when you need a car, you need a car! I have been without a car for months since my last two vehicles broke down and I haven't been able to get one. But thanks to my girlfriend (and her wonderful family) I was able to get my car today. Can't wait to drive it (my girlfriend took it for a ride to get the insurance and title all set up).

This is my first post using my Sprint HTC Touch Pro.

New phone - and it works!!!

Last Friday I decided to get myself something good. Spend a few bucks and got my self a new Sprint HTC Touch Pro. It is like having a mini pc in your pocket (hence the meaning "pocket pc").

It is loaded with the "Windows Mobile 6.1" and the new "TouchFlo 3D". The phone is amazing. You can do just about anything you normally do with your PC.

"Survivor" - the possum

This is the story of a mother Possum; nicknamed "Survivor", by my little sister Sasha.

About a month an a half ago I was heading out the house to go to work around 7:35am and I see this possum just wondering around the front yard of the next house. I could see that it was making funny noises and it was acting like it didn't see me. As I got close I noticed that it was bleeding through nose and mouth. Blood was all over the sidewalk. Apparently the possum got hit by a car earlier in the morning and it just lost it's senses. It couldn't see. The car hit it so hard in the head that both its eyes got damaged. It had difficulties breathing. And it just sat there doing nothing but trying to breath. We tried calling a few places in our city that had to do with animal control, but no luck. No one ever came. Three days this possum spent sitting or laying down in the grass in plain view of everyone just trying to keep it self alive. We gave it food and water but it never ate or drank anything. It was really sad to see this possum in such painful condition and we were wishing that it was better for it have died when that car hit it rather than staying with an agonizing pain. Three days outside, without being able to see, eat; out in the cold wind, and hard rain. After she that it just disappeared. We looked around the empty house and our yard, and nothing. The possum somehow left.

Now just a couple days ago, my mom went to the back yard and saw the possum. It's a miracle! The possum was alive,... and with a big surprise. The possum is a mom of seven baby possums. The will to survive and to leave her legacy. She is not a quitter. That's why my little sister named her "Survivor".

My little sister started searching the internet for someone who might be able to help this possum cause we weren't sure if it was going to make it longer to take care of her babies. On her condition, she looked skinnier and dehydrated. And that's not good for the babies or they could die as well. So my sister got a hold of a phone number that my mom then called and it just happened to be a person that is an expert in possums. She gave us a few instructions and tips on how to get the possum in a cage. Surprisingly, possums make a creepy hiss if they feel threatened and they show you their teeth, but they don't bite at all! So my dad, my brother, Sasha, and me grabbed a cage, a pizza box, and started slowly pushing the possum back inside and making sure that the babies wouldn't fall out of the mother's pouch. She didn't make a noise. She behave really well. We got her inside the cage and the following day my mom and dad took the "Survivor" the possum to our local community college where they were going to meet the lady that was going to take care of the possum and her babies.

It felt really good to see how God's little creatures have a strong will to survive and mostly to protect their little ones. "Survivor" is truly a miracle! How she made it all this time without being able to see, eat or drink, or anything... we don't know; but someone surely was watching over this little creature all this time; and her strong will to bring her little ones to this world it's very touching.

The lady who took "Survivor" will be giving us updates on her condition and her babies.

Another way to do it...

I was not able to post any blogs using my phone and the blogger email. However, I am using a version of the Opera browser, but a mobile version of it. It is called Opera mini. And this is how I'm able to post this message. It is really good and it is compatible with many phones that have internet access. You can find more information about it on "www.opera.com/mini/". You can download directly using your mobile browser (some phone models are not supported!)

The only one thing I can't do with this one is upload pictures directly from my phone, but, however, there are smart phone models; like blackberry, able to do this using Opera mini and it's JAVA applet. Soon I will be upgrading my phone to the HTC Touch Pro from SPRINT.

Just a touch up...

Ok. Last time I was trying to create a new post using my mobile phone. That didn't work for me. Nothing showed up and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. So I just left it as it is; doing postings the regular way (via computer).

Sometimes I use Windows Live Writer to do my postings. Very good program from posting blogs. Go check it out!

Another thing I added to my blog is that banner you see at the top. Didn't came out like I wanted to, but it will do for now until I get some more free time to do my own personal things. That was one of the many pictures I took when I went to PR back in January of 2008 - see blog posting HERE, HERE, and HERE! (last link you will see the pic I made the banner from)

For that banner I used a web application called FotoFlexer - The world's most advanced online photo editor. Very good for a quick edit with lots of tools (kinda reminds me of Adobe Photoshop)

And finally, I am just here at my work computer. All caught up and ready to go have lunch.

I need a car!

Back again after a while. Only thing I have done with this blog is update my profile. Now in other news, my van (actually my dad's) broke down. Engine is busted; but it still runs. I only drive it to work and back, since I only live 5 minutes away from home (how convenient!). When its driving it has a loud clanking noise. Quite embarrassing if you ask me (ha ha ha!)

I did applied to get a loan from my bank and hopefully I will get it today. I will use that money to get me a newer and better car. And this time is going to be mine. About the van? Well, that one will be repaired later on. My dad is getting surgery on his wrists so he wont be able to work for at least 6 weeks. But he does have his own vehicle. All is good!

I'm also trying to set up my phone so I can post to my blog directly from it and so far it hasn't been working. Still trying to figure out what is up with it. Wish me good luck!

I found my Garmin handheld GPS!

Last summer I got into this game called GEOCACHING I went and bought a GARMIN eTREX Vista Hcx handheld GPS that cost me about $300 (ouch!) Well, I went on a few hunts and it is so much fun. After that; near end of summer, I used the GPS and then put it away back into my backpack. After that I don’t remember what happened but I lost my GPS.

A few months passed, and when I did a little clean up in my room and was about to throw away a very old torn up back pack I had from when I attended college, I found my GPS inside! I still can’t remember ever putting it in there since I use a different back pack for it. Well the good news is that I’ve found my GPS and that my $300 are not gone to waste. Batteries are still good! (after all that time)

I’m getting back into the Geocache hunting mood. I am gathering some coordinates and hopefully this weekend I can go hunting. Also my dad bought a metal detector. He says he is going to get rich! ha ha ha… keep trying dad. I love my dad. He is such a wonderful father… sniff!,… ahem! Ok back to topic.

A lot has happened since my last blog (not getting into details!) But today I decided to post here. It's my birthday and I will be spending it with my lovely girlfriend; who sent me flowers to my office today! She is so great.

Also, my co-workers pitched in and bought a cake, when I got back from lunch they all came up to me and started singing the "happy birthday" song. I was really surprised. It was really nice. The cake was good, and I cant wait to get off from work to see my Prietita!

Stuck in Michigan - 10-2008

So we head out to Pontiac, MI for a special worship service. We rode the church van and got there with no problems. As we were riding back home, not even an hour into the highway, the van just decided to shut down. It was like 4 maybe 5 o'clock afternoon time. And we were 3 hours away from home (home being Ohio) stuck in the middle of the highway in Michigan. The church van was composed of mostly youth members, so you know they get all hyper. So what do you do when you are stuck in middle of nowhere, have a group of youngsters, and a digital camera?... of course, you take pictures while doing funny poses!

Stuck in Michigan - 2008

We were there all night as it got cold, but with all that moving around we hardly felt it. At the end of the "photo-shoot" we distributed ourselves into the other cars of other church members, squeezing inside, and that's how we rode back home for the next three hours.
The funny thing is that our Pastor tells us that since the church bought the van in Pontiac, MI the van felt nostalgic and just decided not to go anywhere. For him that was a funny comment; for us, well... we just want to get home!
The good thing is that we manage and made it back home to Ohio. Happy ending for a long cold day. We had Fun!

Sick today - Not good

I am not feeling well today. Weather is changing. Every one at home got the flu, and now it's my turn. Not good.

My body is asking for a bed-rest right now. It was hard to get up this morning to get ready for work. I don't even feel like taking calls or doing home visits. I feel so out of energy.

I did took some medicine last night and this morning too.

I hope I can manage to do my work today.

Back again - New computer!!!

It sure has been a while since I've last posted on here. I have not forgotten about my blog. Not much has happened around here that would motivate me to post and talk about something; that is until now!

I've been fixing and upgrading computers for other people for a few years now. But just a week ago I decided to do something for my self. I went and logged in to Tigerdirect.com, started browsing around for good computer parts, selected a few good parts, and ordered them to be shipped within a day.

I got so happy when I got my computer components. And I started working on it. Perhaps the most difficult part was putting the motherboard in. Looks easy but the trick was to lining up the back ports with the back panel. Anyways, I got it in and from there everything else was a "piece of cake". Now I can say that I built my very own computer; which by the way is a gaming computer and my favorite game that I setup on it is Battlfield 2. Graphics, sounds, hardware is amazing! Fast computer with 4GB RAM, 2 XFX nVidia 8600 GT @ 1GB each setup in SLI mode, and a Creative Xfi sound card. Logitech gaming keyboard and a microsoft sidewinder mouse. Money well spent!

Gone, but not for long!

It feels like I havent posted in a very long time. But I'm still around. My office work and family related activities keep me busy all the time, so that's good.

I was in Puerto Rico for a week and came back just a few days ago. I had a lot of fun over there. Saw many of my good old friends, and relatives. Everybody was surprised and happy to see me. No one knew I was going to visit. And no,.. I did not went to the beach once. I'm surprised about that too!

I bought myself a Sony PSP. Got me the new Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow game... I give it a big "10". Really cool game. I'm also thinking of buying the Metal Gear series also. But one at a time. Still getting use to the buttons and controls since my thing is computer games, not console games, or portable consoles in this matter.

Yesterday was a real busy day for us at church; since we are the musicians at our church. First we had to wake up early on Sunday (8:45am) cause we needed to set up the tent for the people who were going to do the food sell fundraiser, and help them sell... it was so hot out there! Then about 1:00pm we had to go back to church and take apart the set of drums and hardware, the keyboard, guitars, bass, and amps, and set it up on the van and the cars; then go home and get ready... about ten of us. Come back to church to meet the others there, and then drive about 35 min. to the church where we were going to play... It was all good, except that the church was small and it was really hot inside, since they only have ceiling fans and no AC. We were all scrunched up in there. Service finished about 7:00pm and then we ate some food, and then head back to our church and put the instruments back together. We got home about 9:45pm. lol But we had fun.

Today I feel really tired. Couldn't get to sleep fast enough because it was hot. So me, my brother, and my little sister decided to sleep in our parent's room cause it has AC; man that felt so good! But still am tired. I guess because of yesterday.

Yesterday our church started it's fundraising activity selling puertorican food, BBQ chicken, and some more. We did great for being the first day in this summer, and lots of people bought our food and looked very pleased. So that's a good sign for us. They are also doing their scratchcards fundraiser. I'm still working on mine!

Hello there! Yesterday was good for me. I tried posting last night and it's amazing how hard is to write about something when you don't have any ideas of what your going to type about. But I remembered that's the first step to writing on a blog... type about how you cant come up with something good!

Anyway, good things to talked about happened yesterday at my church. The whole congregation made the decision to work in lots of fundraising ideas and move into a new building. God has promised us a long time ago, and has been confirming this by other preachers that don't know our situation... It's amazing! We started a scratchcards fundraiser, also we are doing food sell... hmm good!

This building you see in the image (large structure) is the building we are intending on acquiring, along with the parking lot you see on the bottom-left corner of the picture. I know God will help us,.. He has promised so!
Another good news is that God is blessing us very much, we now have a family that moved to Lorain and are going to be part of our church, and also my Pastor's sister and her husband moved here too! WOW

Yes,... thank you Lord for another day! Yesterday I was feeling so tired and with a headache. I got that summer cold that just wont go. But I took some good medicine last night and slept like a baby. Now today I almost didn't wanted to get out of bed... that medicine sure did it's job. My throat felt much better, no headache, and all is good. Today is a better feeling for me!

Also yesterday I got our fundraising package for the church. It's a scratchcards package and I will be presenting the fundraising project to our church tonight. I got some good volunteers,... I'm pretty sure we will do well.

Back at work! and some more...
Just a few weeks ago I started working again at the office... But this time around it's not as crowded or busy like in the winter season. It's going much slower; and that's good for me! It's only for 3 months.

I also deleted my MySpace; just got bored of updating that one. I rather stick with this one... why? Because it's much organized, loads faster, and looks pretty. But that's just me.

On another news,... our church is in the process of making a final decision to acquire a new building and move out from our old one. God has promised us a bigger structure (we don't fit all people in the current one), and He is the one who is going to put everything in place during this process. So we are praying and waiting patiently, but also doing our part.

New laptop computer!!!

Well this month I decided to get me a laptop computer (trying to keep up with technology) from an office supply store. I got a good price for this laptop; great features and nice response. The only thing is that it was the display model they were selling,.. but who cares! I still got a good deal on it. And this is what I'm using right now to do this posting.

Another thing I bought is a wireless router so I can access my internet from anywhere in the house. Sweet! I may not have the fanciest things around but I sure know how to make them work for me. Also I managed to make a home network with the current computer I have downstairs. I can easily transfer files back to and from my laptop to the other home desktop computer. That way I don't have to overload my laptop with all the songs,.. just access the network pc and voila!

Quick way to color-correct a picture - Hobby

If you are like me that loves to take pictures and capture every wonderful moment into an everlasting image, and if you happen to have Adobe Photoshop CS2,.. then you can quickly get those few, if not hundreds, of digital images and fix their colors and contrast very quickly.

First of all, make sure you learn some of the Adobe Photoshop CS2 shortcut keys... the come very handy a lot of the time your touching up a picture!

Now, since I have already written an article on WikiHow, I'm not gonna type the whole thing in here... I rather give you the direct link of that article here.

Friendly ghost (camera trick) - Hobby

Here is something interesting (and freaky if you tell me) to look at. If you look closely, it seems like an evil ghost with skeleton fingers and like wings coming out on the sides... and no torso or legs! But don't worry. It's not a real ghost, but my first attempt at doing camera tricks for "ghostly appearances"

I was bored that night, so I took my SONY Cybershot camera and started playing around with the manual settings (aperture size, ISO exposure, Shutter speed, etc) And that was the outcome of the first one; which was not what I intended to make it look like, cause it had too much ISO exp.

I tried it one more time and it seems I got some pretty good settings and managed to get a better looking one. See the picture below... Now that's a more "friendly" looking ghost. (btw: that's me as the subject!)

I showed this to some of my friends and they were amazed with it (but I was amazed too when I got it right lol)

One of my major hobbies is Photography. I love taking pictures of anything that catches my attention. I've been at it for five years now, and I started off with a cheap $20 digital camera with 1X pixels (when they were still around! or easy to find). As time passed I managed to buy a Canon Powershot A300 @ 3.2 MP. And finally my last investment was on a SONY Cybershot DSC-H2 (not all-pro but it sure does the job right!)

I have learned some few tricks from professional photographers, and it's fun when you get in to it. Getting right exposure, right angle, and right moment (that could be any moment). And like they say: "A picture is worth a thousand words!" So true. that's all for now.

Oh Yes! A great piece of paradise (imho); and let me tell you... I sure do miss it a lot.

This is the beutiful Island of Puerto Rico. And to be more specific; the pictures you see are of El Morro. A very old fort that saw and served many battles from oncoming naval enemy ships dating to the 1500's.

Located at the true heart of the Island; San Juan, Puerto Rico. Also the Capitol city of PR.

I remember going there with my parents; on that big open green land you see on the right side picture; to fly kites. So wonderful memory, makes me want to go back!

It's a Fantom Xa from Roland. Quite a lovely piece of art. This is one of my "I wish a had one" feelings at the time. I have gone to Guitar Center a few times before just to play with this amazing keyboard.

It's sound perfomance is non-like other. Very clear, clean, and cool sound. And some of it's best features are the ability to create samples with breeze.

Hobby - RC Helicopter! First time

Ok! This is my first entry for my Blogger.com blog. My first topic here will be my new found hobby. And just like the title of this topic implies, it's RC helicopters.

Just recently I bought an RC Helicopter at Ebay.com. And let me tell you,... it's quite a fun toy to play with; as long as you know how to maneuver it!

I've been wanting an RC Helicopter for a while and I finally got to buy one. Once I got it, I opened the box and it came pretty much assembled. It's a simple RC Helicopter.

I put in the batteries for the Control and plugged in the charger for the RC Helicopter. Let that charge for a couple of hours and started my test runs; which scared me for a second :)

I started up the RC Helicopter and in no time that thing was in the air, but at first it did a couple of spins. Nothing much of a big deal. But it sure can fly very steady. And it brings a nice satisfaction and enjoyment for what I paid for it. Nice!
